Call for Ken Ofori Atta to resign has deepened NPPs democracy

The call by some New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament to the President to remove Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and Minister of State for Finance, Charles Adu Boahen, has deepened democracy within the ruling party, according to Ernest Owusu Bempah, Deputy Director of Communications for the NPP.

This, in his opinion, cannot occur in the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Mr. Owusu Bempah stated that he cannot imagine former President John Dramani Mahama being in power long enough for some NDC lawmakers, including North Tongu and Ningo Prampram MPs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Samuel Nartey George, to organize a press conference demanding that he fire Finance Minister Seth Terkper.

“This cannot happen in the NDC,” he said on Thursday’s Ekosii Sen show on Asempa FM.

“This has deepened democracy in the NPP,” he said.

The Parliamentary Majority has threatened to boycott the presentation and debate on the 2023 budget statement unless President Akufo-Addo removes Mr Ofori-Atta and Adu Boahen.

The NPP MPs believe that the country’s current economic situation does not justify the two gentlemen remaining in office and that the President should ask them to step down.

At a press conference in Parliament on Tuesday, October 25, a lawmaker from Asante Akyem North, Andy Appiah Kubi, stated, “We are unhappy with the developments in the country, we consulted our constituents who also expressed their dissatisfaction.”

“Through this medium, we express our strong desire that the President immediately replace the Minister of Finance and the Minister of State in the Finance Ministry.”

“We want to serve notice, and notice is hereby served, that we members of the Majority Caucus here in Parliament will not participate in any business of Government by or for the president by any other Minister until such persons as aforementioned are made to resign or removed from office.”
