Dr. Clement Apaak, Member of Parliament for Builsa South, has joined teacher unions in their opposition to Dr. Eric Nkansah’s appointment as Director-General of the Ghana Education Service.
Dr. Apaak, the Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Education Committee, said at a press conference that the president should have considered the views of stakeholders before making the appointment.
The unions have claimed that the new Director General of the GES is not a professional teacher and is therefore unsuitable for the position.
“They are correct,” Dr. Apaak said. There are a variety of reasons why we have different professionals… Every profession strives to develop its own to eventually become the person at the pinnacle.”
“So when you bring in someone who doesn’t have the necessary background or doesn’t meet their standard, it affects morale as well.”
Dr. Apaak also stated that the appointment of Dr. Nkansah would increase tensions between unions and the government.
“It complicates policy implementation because, whether the President likes it or not, the director general must work with teacher unions.”

“I have sided with the teacher unions because I believe they are in the theater, and I always give them the benefit of the doubt, knowing full well that their request is not outrageous in this case,” Dr. Apaak added.
