Anas Aremeyaw Anas of Tiger Eye P.I., an investigative journalist, has asked state authorities and other agencies to ensure that media personnel who continue to receive death threats receive immediate protection.
He is also seeking justice for a colleague journalist who was brutally murdered in the course of his work.
Anas’ call follows recent reports of threats and attacks on journalists in the country.
He specifically named Manasseh Azure Awuni, Edward Adeti, Afia Pokuaah, Captain Smart, Abdul Hayi Moomen, and David Tamakloe as people whose lives must be protected by security agencies.
The Tiger Eye P.I boss issued a statement condemning the attacks, calling them “barbaric and backward,” adding that “it is a terrible thing to practise journalism under conditions such as these, and it is even more dangerous when nothing is done, and the perpetrators get to carry out their threats.”
He has thus charged the government, security forces, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), and the National Media Commission (NMC) with conducting a thorough investigation into the incident and ensuring that those responsible are apprehended and subjected to the full force of the law.
Tiger Sight P.I urges the government to condemn these threats and careless utterances, whether made by a legislator, a government official, or opposition groups, in the strongest terms possible. Security agencies must investigate the sources of death threats and apprehend the perpetrators. Security forces should not be seen or used to carry out such attacks or intimidation.
“We urge the National Media Commission and the Ghana Journalist Association to do more, especially in engaging political parties and journalists who pursue public interest journalism,” the statement continued.
While expressing solidarity with his affected media colleagues, Anas also recalled the death of a former team member, Ahmed Suale, and stated that no journalist should ever be subjected to such a heinous experience again.
“All journalists and sympathisers in this country are still reeling from the murder of Ahmed Suale. No journalist in the country will be able to withstand the bullets of their assassins if they become targets.”
