The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has launched a major decongestion exercise across several parts of the capital, beginning with key commercial zones including Kantamanto Market, Tudu, and the Kinbu Senior High Technical School area.
Led by the Mayor of Accra, Michael Allotey, the operation was carried out on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, with the goal of clearing public spaces to improve movement and sanitation in the city.
Addressing the media after the exercise, Mayor Allotey stressed that the AMA’s campaign is not a “nine-day wonder” and assured the public of its continuity. He said the team will extend the operation to Adabraka, Circle, and Kaneshie.
“I don’t give promises I cannot stand. Whatever I say, I do. This exercise is not a nine-day wonder—we are on the streets to make sure the roads are cleared,” he stated. “From here, we will pass through where we are coming from all the way to Circle, and if there’s more strength, we continue to Kaneshie, then continue tomorrow.”
The AMA had previously issued notice of the exercise, which is being conducted in collaboration with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly. It forms part of a broader initiative to restore order and promote cleanliness in high-traffic commercial areas.
The operation is focusing on key areas around the AMA Head Office, including Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and Opera Square through to Adabraka.
Speaking to Citi News, AMA Public Relations Officer Gilbert Ankrah confirmed that enforcement would also intensify along routes such as Wato Junction to Cow Lane and around landmarks like the Accra City Hotel and Mövenpick Hotel.
“The plan is straightforward, with the main focus on the areas surrounding the AMA Head Office. All zones within that enclave will be addressed,” Ankrah said, emphasizing the assembly’s commitment to maintaining a cleaner, more orderly city.
