As the country faces another surge in confirmed cases, President Nana Akufo-Addo is urging churches and mosques to continue to strictly adhere to COVID-19 preventive protocols.
He stated that the maximum two-hour duration for their respective services, as well as the practise of hand hygiene, must be strictly followed.
“To the revered leaders of our religious organisations, namely our churches and mosques,” the President said, “I entreat you to strictly enforce the protocols relating to attendance, namely the two-hour duration, one-meter social distancing, mask wearing, use of sanitizers, and presence of Veronica buckets, liquid soap, and rolls of tissue paper.”
On Sunday, January 31, 2021, the President made the statement during an address providing updates on the country’s fight against COVID-19.
The President announced the reinstatement of bans on concerts, public funerals, weddings, and parties as a step toward reducing the country’s rapidly rising COVID-19 cases.
According to him, the country was now recording an average of 700 new infections per day, a phenomenon that he believes could lead to the country’s demise if not addressed immediately.
Churches and mosques in the country have been conducting their services under some defined structures specified by the government since May 2020, when the government lifted the restriction of total ban on them.
Churches and mosques were instructed at the time to hold services with a maximum of 100 congregants at a time for a maximum of one hour.

They were also to ensure that all members of religious organisations wore face masks and that all attendees of religious services had their names and contact information recorded.
During services, social distancing was also recommended, in addition to frequent handwashing, the use of hand sanitisers, and the fumigation of their premises.
These were eased a few weeks later when the one-hour time limit was increased to two hours.
