A GRA and Cocobod Operation exposes fertilizer smugglers

15 trucks that were allegedly carrying smuggled fertilizer have been impounded by a joint team from the Special Services Unit of the Ghana Cocoa Board (Cocobod) and the Counter-Terrorism Unit of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

The team also found Fertagro Ghana Limited, a warehouse and a factory where the illegal fertilizers were being repackaged.

The recipients of the Ghana Cocoa Board’s free fertilizer program are supposed to use cocoa fertilizers.

Workers could be seen repackaging the fertilizer into what appeared to be foreign sacks intended for export.

The person believed to be the company owner who was detained during the operation denied the claims of smuggling by claiming he has a license from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

Charles Amenyaglo, the Ghana Cocoa Board’s Director of Special Services, stated that he would be shocked if the owner actually had a permit from the Ministry.

According to him, the company’s activities were the subject of intelligence that led to the swoop.
“Today is the first time we’ve seen it on this scale, and it’s conclusive proof of what we’ve been thinking all along.”
