The head of the National Police of Ukraine Ihor Klymenko said this morning that a helicopter of the State Emergency Service crashed in a nursery in Brovary, a Kyiv suburb.
As a result of the crash, the minister of internal affairs, Minister Denys Monastyrskyi, the first deputy Minister, Yevhen Yenin, the state secretary and three children all died during the incident.
The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the officials were “true patriots of Ukraine.
As of this minute, three children died. It is an indescribable pain.” He added.
At the time of publishing this article, there had been no immediate information about what led to the crashing of the helicopter.
Although, images from the scene show plumes and smoke going into the sky in the Northeast of the capital. However, the cause of the helicopter crash has not yet been revealed.
Oleksiy Kuleba, the governor of Kyiv also disclosed that 29 people were injured during the incident including 15 children.
“At the time of the tragedy, children and staff of the institution were in the kindergarten. Everyone has now been evacuated.”
Mr Kuleba added.
The Minister, Mr Denys Monastyrskyi, is the oldest senior Ukrainian official to have died ever since the beginning of the war with Russia last year.
He was in charge of the Ukrainian police and other emergency services in the country and is held in high esteem by the president.
The Ukrainian advisor to the minister of internal affairs, Anton Gerashchenko, said concerning the death of Mr Denys Monastyrskyi;
“Minister of Internal Affairs Denys Monastyrskyi, his 1st deputy Yevhen Yenin and Ministry’s state secretary Yurii Lubkovych died today in the Kyiv region. My colleagues, my friends. What a tragic loss. Deepest condolences to their families.”
The first lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska has also sent her condolences too.
“Another very sad day today – new losses.” She said,
Other Ukrainian top officials have also sent their heartfelt condolences to the family of Mr Denys Monastyrskyi.
The UK foreign secretary, James Cleverly wrote in his Twitter handle about the loss of Mr Dents,
“Denys was a true friend of the UK. We are ready to support Ukraine in whatever way we can.”
Also, Yiva Johansson, the EU’s home affairs commissioner described Mr Denys Monastyrsky as a “hero”.
“News of the death of Denys Monastyrsky, Yevhen Yenin and Yurii Lubkovich has shocked me deeply. My condolences to the families of all the victims of this tragedy. Denys is a true Ukrainian hero – over the last year leading with bravery and stoicism,” she wrote on Twitter.
“He was my friend. Working with him this past year was an honor. The EUHomeAffairs community and Interior Affairs Ministries in all 27 capitals, will feel this loss greatly. We will continue our work helping Ukrainians and helping Ukraine, in Denys’ memory. Slava Ukraini”
The police, ambulance services, and firefighters are presently working on the scene.
