55-year-old businessman jailed 3 years for recruitment fraud

Samuel Boakye, a 55-year-old businessman, was sentenced to three years in jail by an Accra Circuit Court for scamming three people under the guise of supporting them in becoming enlisted in various security organizations.

Boakye pled guilty to three charges of defrauding by false pretense.

Mrs Patricia Amponsah presided over the court, which found Boakye guilty on his own plea and punished him accordingly.

It further ordered Boakye to pay the fine when he completed his term.

The prosecution, Inspector Rosemond Anyane, informed the court that the complainants were Accra residents Dumeda Setsofia Junior, Elizabeth Mensah, and Constance Acheampong Otuo.

According to the prosecution, Boakye, a convicted felon, lived at Circle, near Neoplan Station in Accra.

Enyonam Gertrude Amegah, a witness in the case, met Boakye in Kwame Nkrumah Circle in 2020 and they became friends.

The prosecution also stated Boakye asked Gertrude whether she knew someone who was interested in joining the security services and that he knew someone who could help.

It was stated that after receiving the promise, the witness informed her family in the Volta Region and Accra. The complainants expressed interest and began working with Boakye.

According to the report, Boakye requested and received GHS700 from Setsofia Junior, GHS1,950 from Elizabeth Mensah, and GHS1,950 from Constance Acheampong Otuo, for a total of GHS4,600.

And the prosecution said, after collecting the different sums, Boakye informed the complainants that he would help them get jobs in the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Immigration Service, and Customs.

Boakye went into hiding soon after collecting the funds since he failed to deliver on his promise.

But on November 7, this year, Gertrude discovered Boakye in Kwame Nkrumah Circle and arrested him and he was taken to the Adabraka Police Station for questioning. During questioning, he acknowledged the crime and stated that he paid the money to one Ansong to ease the procedure.

However, the prosecution claimed that Boakye was unable to persuade the police to arrest Ansong.
